Hay Fever Treatment in Sarasota, FL

What is Hay Fever?

Hay fever - also known as allergic rhinitis - is an allergic condition which often occurs seasonally in response to the concentration of airborne triggers like pollen. Despite popular belief, hay fever is not solely caused by the harvesting of hay. Common triggers of hay fever may all trigger of individual allergic reactions. Hay fever is used to describe the combined allergic reactions to triggers which we are often exposed to at the same time.

Symptoms of Hay Fever

Symptoms of hay fever are similar to those of a common cold, including sneezing, congestion, and a runny nose. The condition is believed to be more common in children. Adults may be able to outgrow the symptoms of hay fever by building a tolerance to triggers over time. A number of over-the-counter symptom relief options are available. Stronger treatment options focus on permanently reducing the influence of hay fever.

Common symptoms of hay fever include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Itchiness, redness in eyes
  • Congestion
  • Sore throat

Treating Hay Fever

The best way to begin treatment is to first address the underlying cause creating an immune system imbalance. It is often recommended to begin an elimination diet to remove common allergens from the the diet that may be triggering an immune response.

Over-the-counter medications are available for symptomatic relief but do not treat the underlying cause. More severe cases often occur when hay fever adds to the symptoms of an existing condition, such as asthma. In these cases, it is common for doctors to prescribe antihistamines or corticosteroids.

Immunotherapy may also be considered for more severe cases. With this treatment option, those suffering from the symptoms of hay fever receive gradually increasing doses of the allergens causing their symptoms. Their immune system slowly develops a tolerance to the allergen. Once immunotherapy is complete, the symptoms of hay fever may be greatly reduced (potentially even undetectable).

Oral Allergy Syndrome

Oral allergy syndrome is often mistaken for hay fever. Oral allergy syndrome occurs when the immune system confuses proteins found in food such as apples or celery for the proteins which trigger hay fever. This triggers what is known as cross-reactivity, causing symptoms hay fever in those who ingest these similar proteins. Talk to your doctor about which foods may trigger symptoms of hay fever for you.

Preventing Hay Fever

Preventing hay fever is easy in concept but difficult in practice. The goal is simply to avoid known triggers. However, when those triggers are airborne, it may not be so easy to consciously evade. Tools for preventing hay fever - or minimizing the development of symptoms - include wearing a face mask outdoors to avoid inhaling pollen particles and using an air filter to keep potential airborne triggers from entering your house.
